How to Use These Books for CMS
Don’t read cover to cover. UPSC CMS tests clinical application, not exhaustive factual recall. Use the previous year questions (practice them on CMS Prep) to identify which chapters and topics appear most, then read those sections in depth.
Davidson’s over Harrison’s for Medicine. Harrison’s is a reference encyclopaedia. Davidson’s is exam-oriented, concise, and covers all major Medicine topics that have appeared in CMS papers.
For PSM, read the whole Park’s. PSM is one of the most scoring subjects in CMS if you know Park’s well. National health programmes, biostatistics, and environmental health are high-yield.
Editions matter. Use the latest editions listed above. UPSC CMS sometimes tests updated guidelines (e.g., revised NHP targets, updated WHO criteria) which older editions won’t have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which book is best for UPSC CMS Medicine?
Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Internal Medicine (21st Ed.) is the standard for CMS. It is more concise and exam-oriented than Harrison’s. Use Harrison’s only for topics that Davidson’s covers briefly, such as Rheumatology or detailed Neurology.
Do I need both DC Dutta Obstetrics and Gynaecology books?
Yes. UPSC CMS Paper 2 includes both Obstetrics and Gynaecology questions. The DC Dutta Obstetrics and the separate Gynaecology book (or Sheila Balakrishnan) are both needed for complete OBG coverage.
Is Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics needed or is Ghai enough?
Ghai Essential Paediatrics is sufficient for UPSC CMS. Nelson is a reference text and far more detailed than needed. Read Ghai thoroughly and refer to Nelson only for specific doubts on topics like rare metabolic disorders or specific growth charts.
Should I buy a CMS-specific MCQ book?
The most effective MCQ practice is the actual previous year papers, which are available free on CMS Prep (1440+ questions, 2020–2025). Commercial MCQ books vary in accuracy. Always practice PYQs first before any supplementary MCQ books.

🎓 Use PYQs to guide your reading
After identifying high-yield topics from PYQs, return to the relevant chapter in Davidson’s or Park’s. This targeted approach is more effective than linear reading.
