UPSC CMS Medicine Questions

General Medicine is the most heavily weighted subject in UPSC CMS Paper I. It covers a broad range of internal medicine topics alongside allied specialties including Dermatology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, ENT, and Radiology.

UPSC CMS Paper I consists of General Medicine and Paediatrics. Medicine questions primarily test clinical reasoning, diagnostic ability, and knowledge of first-line treatment protocols. Questions are framed around real clinical scenarios — a patient presenting with symptoms, investigations, and management decisions.

Based on analysis of CMS papers from 2020–2025, medicine accounts for approximately 55–65 questions in Paper I. The primary reference used by UPSC is Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine.

Medicine questions in UPSC CMS have shifted from broad textbook recall (2020) toward applied clinical-vignette questions, particularly in Cardiology and Endocrinology, by 2024–2025. Infectious Disease has remained consistently high-yield across all six years, while Gastroenterology saw a sharp rise in 2023. Multi-statement 'which of the following is/are correct' formats have become more common since 2021, requiring deeper conceptual clarity rather than single-fact recall.
