The UPSC Combined Medical Services examination has specific eligibility requirements regarding educational qualification, nationality, and age. Nationality

A candidate must be a citizen of India. Certain exceptions apply for candidates of Nepalese, Bhutanese, Tibetan refugee origin or persons of Indian origin who have migrated from certain countries with the intention of permanently settling in India, subject to eligibility certificates issued by the Government of India. These non-Indian candidates must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India, and the offer of appointment will not be issued until this certificate is submitted.

A general category candidate who starts appearing at age 24 (after completing internship) can theoretically attempt the exam up to 8 times before turning 32.

Selected candidates must satisfy physical and medical standards prescribed by the relevant service rules, assessed post-selection. Candidates with certain disabilities may be eligible for PwBD relaxations. Common Eligibility Mistakes

Every year, some candidates face disqualification because of avoidable errors:

Age miscalculation: Age is calculated as on the exam date, not the notification or application date. A candidate who is 32 years and 1 day old on the exam date is not eligible. Double-check your exact age as on August 2, 2026.

Missing internship deadline: You must complete internship before the personality test. If your completion date is uncertain, apply only if you are confident it concludes before the interview schedule.

Invalid OBC certificate: The certificate must be current, must state you are not in the Creamy Layer, and must be in UPSC’s prescribed format. Certificates in wrong formats are rejected outright.

Applying under wrong category: Some apply under UR despite having a valid OBC/SC/ST certificate, missing the lower cut off. Others claim a reserved category without valid documentation, leading to disqualification.

Unrecognised degree: Candidates from unrecognised colleges or foreign universities without FMGE/NExT clearance are not eligible.
