AFMS Physical Test 2026 — Standards, Events & How to Prepare
The AFMS physical fitness test is the stage most MBBS doctors underestimate. After years of clinical study and internship, physical fitness often takes a back seat. Here are the exact standards, what happens on test day, and a preparation plan to clear it comfortably.
Important: Physical test standards may vary slightly between Army, Navy, and Air Force notifications. The figures below are based on published AFMS SSC MO notifications. Always verify with the official call letter you receive.
Physical Test Events & Qualifying Standards
| Event | Male Standard | Female Standard | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km Run | Within 7 min 30 sec | Within 9 min | Flat ground, no track required |
| Push-ups | Minimum 20 in one go | Modified push-ups allowed | Full body push-ups, chest touches ground |
| Sit-ups | Minimum 20 in one go | Minimum 15 | Feet held, full sit-up counted |
| Chin-ups / Pull-ups | Minimum 6 | Not required | Overhand grip, full extension each rep |

What Happens on Physical Test Day?
- Report time: Typically 6:00–7:00 AM at the selection centre. Carry your call letter and all original documents.
- Warm-up: Brief collective warm-up conducted by army instructors.
- 1.6 km Run first: All candidates run together. Timing is recorded individually.
- Ground events: Push-ups, sit-ups and chin-ups are conducted after the run with a short rest interval.
- Immediate result: You are informed on the same day whether you cleared the physical test.
- Medical board same day/next day: Those who clear proceed to the medical examination immediately or the following day.
- Dress: Sports kit (track pants + t-shirt + running shoes). No formal wear for this stage.
3-Month Physical Preparation Plan
| Period | Running | Strength | Target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Month 1 (Base) | Run 1.6km daily at comfortable pace | 10 push-ups + 10 sit-ups daily | Build habit, no injury |
| Month 2 (Build) | Run 3km daily, track your 1.6km time | 20 push-ups + 20 sit-ups + 3 chin-ups | Run under 8 min 30 sec |
| Month 3 (Peak) | Interval training: 400m sprints × 4 | 30 push-ups + 30 sit-ups + 6 chin-ups | Run under 7 min 30 sec comfortably |
Most important advice: Start preparing at least 3 months before your selection call letter date. Do NOT attempt to cram physical fitness in 2 weeks before the test — it does not work and risks injury. Most failed AFMS physical tests happen because doctors start too late.
Medical Fitness Standards (During Medical Board)
After clearing the physical fitness test, you appear before an Armed Forces Medical Board on the same or next day. Key medical standards:
- Vision: 6/12 or better in each eye (correctable to 6/6 with glasses/contact lenses). Colour blindness is disqualifying for some branches.
- Hearing: Normal hearing. Significant sensorineural hearing loss is disqualifying.
- Blood pressure: Within normal limits without medication. Controlled hypertension on medication is usually disqualifying for active duty roles.
- Diabetes: Insulin-dependent diabetes is disqualifying. Well-controlled type 2 on oral medication — assessed case by case.
- Musculoskeletal: No significant deformity, old fractures with limited function, or chronic joint disease.
- Psychiatric history: Significant psychiatric illness or medication history is disqualifying.
- Dental: Sound dentition required — dental fitness certificate may be requested.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the running time required for AFMS physical test?
Male candidates must complete 1.6 km within approximately 7 minutes 30 seconds. Female candidates within approximately 9 minutes. These are minimum standards — performing faster does not earn extra points but comfortably clearing shows overall fitness.
I wear spectacles — am I eligible for AFMS?
Yes. Spectacle wearers are eligible if vision is correctable to 6/6 in each eye. You will need to wear your spectacles or contact lenses during the visual acuity test in the medical board. Extreme myopia (beyond −5.0 D in both eyes) may be disqualifying in some branches.
What if I fail the physical test?
You are disqualified from that selection round. You can reapply in the next notification cycle. There is no permanent disqualification for failing the physical test. Use the intervening period to improve fitness through a structured training plan.
