AFMS Selection Process 2026 โ€” Complete Step-by-Step Guide

AFMS has no written examination. Instead, selection is a multi-stage process: online application, shortlisting, physical fitness test, medical examination, and interview. Here is exactly how it works โ€” step by step.

Complete Selection Process โ€” 5 Stages

Stage 1 โ€” Online Application

Recruitment notifications are published separately by each branch:

  • Army: joinindianarmy.nic.in
  • Navy: nausena-bharti.nic.in
  • Air Force: careerindianairforce.cdac.in

Fill the online application with personal details, MBBS marks, internship dates, and NMC registration number. Upload scanned documents (MBBS degree, internship certificate, NMC registration, passport photos). Pay the application fee (if applicable).

Stage 2 โ€” Shortlisting

After the application deadline, the branch shortlists candidates based on MBBS academic record, internship completion, and document verification. Shortlisted candidates receive a call letter specifying the date and venue for the physical test. There is no written exam at this stage.

Stage 3 โ€” Physical Fitness Test

The physical fitness test assesses basic physical conditioning. Events include a 1.6 km run, push-ups, sit-ups, and chin-ups (males). Each event has minimum qualifying standards. Candidates who fail the physical test are screened out at this stage. See full physical test details โ†’

Stage 4 โ€” Medical Examination

Candidates who clear the physical test appear before an Armed Forces Medical Board. The board assesses vision, hearing, dental fitness, cardiovascular health, musculoskeletal fitness, and overall physical health as per military standards. Candidates with chronic conditions (uncontrolled hypertension, diabetes, epilepsy, significant psychiatric history) may be found medically unfit.

Stage 5 โ€” Interview

A selection board of senior AFMS officers conducts a formal interview. Duration is typically 30โ€“45 minutes. The interview assesses medical knowledge, leadership potential, communication skills, knowledge of current affairs and defence/health matters, and motivation for joining the armed forces. Final Merit List & Commission

After all stages, a final merit list is prepared combining physical test performance, medical fitness, and interview marks. Selected candidates receive an offer of Short Service Commission. They then report to Army Medical Corps Centre (Lucknow for Army), INS Asvini (Mumbai for Navy), or relevant Air Force base for orientation and training before posting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any written exam in AFMS selection?
No written MCQ or theory examination. The selection consists entirely of physical fitness test, medical examination, and interview. This is a key difference from UPSC CMS and ESIC which require written exams.
Can I reapply if I fail one stage?
Yes. If you fail the physical test or medical board, you can reapply for the next notification cycle (typically every 6โ€“12 months). There is no permanent ban for failing at any stage in a previous attempt.
Do I need to go to a specific city for the selection?
Yes. Physical test, medical board, and interview are conducted at designated selection centres โ€” typically at Army hospitals, Navy base hospitals, or Air Force stations. Travel expenses are usually not reimbursed for SSC MO selection.
