What is FMGE, and who needs to clear it?

The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) is a mandatory screening test for Indian citizens who complete their MBBS (or equivalent) degree from a medical college outside India. Passing it is a legal requirement before such graduates can register with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and practise medicine in India — a foreign MBBS degree alone does not grant the right to practise here, regardless of how the course was structured abroad.

FMGE is conducted twice a year and is objective-type, covering the full pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects taught across an MBBS curriculum — essentially testing whether a foreign-trained graduate has the same working medical knowledge expected of an Indian MBBS graduate. There is no negative marking, which changes exam-taking strategy compared to exams like NEET PG that do penalise wrong answers.

How FMGE relates to NExT

The National Exit Test (NExT) is a newer, planned licensing exam intended to eventually replace both the final-year MBBS exit exam and FMGE with a single common standard for Indian and foreign medical graduates alike. Until NExT is fully rolled out and FMGE is formally phased out, foreign medical graduates should continue to prepare and register for FMGE under the current rules — candidates should always confirm the applicable requirement for their graduating batch, since transition rules can differ by cohort.

Because FMGE tests the same broad subject base as NEET PG and INICET, many aspirants use their FMGE preparation as a foundation for postgraduate entrance exams afterward, rather than treating it as an isolated hurdle.
